Christmas card featuring aqua and gold gift wrap for the background, a gold embossed nativity layered with gold

Another card using that aqua and gold gift wrap from the past Christmas season! It is a very nice heavy weight paper which I really nice to work with.  I trimmed it to a 4" x 4" and adhered it to an ivory card.  I gold embossed this nativity stamp onto the aqua cardstock, trimmed it to size and then added a layer of gold gift wrap before adhering it to my card front.  I added a bit of colour to the center of the star and I was done!!

I am working at getting a few more Christmas cards made with these aqua and gold gift wrap backgrounds.  I cut the nativity wide this time and got a much large scene, gold embossed the greeting on the bottom section,  added a gold ribbon with a tie and then ran my tracing wheel a couple of times across the bottom.  I adhered the background to an ivory card and then mounted the large element I created over it.  Added a little gold star punchie over the stable to finish it off!!

Christmas cards featuring aqua and gold gift wrap, die cut Nativity and gold embossed greetings

These cards feature the last piece of gift wrap I have to turn into cards!!! Is it a wood grain in gold and light aqua which I have been mulling over exactly how I would use it!!  I started by digging out some aqua cardstock which I have had for a while and worked really well with this paper.  I die cut two nativities (Taylored Expressions) leaving a length of cardstock below.  I trimmed off the star and gold embossed the greetings on the bottom section.  I trimmed the bottom edges using decorative scissors.  I selectively embossed the middle section on the first card using a wood grain embossing folder and then added a length of gold ribbon.  I added a wider ribbon with a tie to the second card without any dry embossing.  I mounted the trimmed gift wrap backgrounds to ivory card fronts and then mounted the large elements I created over it.  I punched little star from gold metallic card (packaging) and adhered them in place over the stable.    Happy with how these turned out! Christmas cards featuring glittery pinecone backgrounds, die cut ornaments and silver foil accents

Made these Christmas cards using the last of this beautiful glittery pine cone gift wrap which arrived over the holiday season wrapped around one of our gifts.  I mounted the backgrounds to red cards.  I die cut the ornaments (SX) and then die cut the word (TH) out of the middle section.  These are not coordinating dies but they worked out really well.  Next, I dug out my oval Nestibilities to see if I would be fortunate enough to find one of them that would cut an oval appropriate for filling in the opening.  Yes, there is one that does the job perfectly!!!  I cut the ovals from silver foil and also cut the top of the ornament as well.  I trimmed the tops and used white glue to adhere them to the ornaments.  I used regular tape to adhere the ovals to the back of the the ornaments.  I added white thread hangers to them which I secured on the inside of the cards using regular tape as well and then used 3D foam tape to mount the ornaments to the card fronts.   Really happy to have a few more cards for my stash!    Therese

Christmas cards featuring a large Merry Christmas greeting, ribbon and glittery gift wrap backgrounds

Another set of Christmas cards for my stash using the same glittery pine cone gift wrap as I used for my last set.  These ones feature a large greeting I downloaded from Mom Junction which I sized, laser printed onto white cardstock and added a black line all the way around to give it some depth.  I watercoloured the  greeting and holly and then added some clear glitter in the stars and dots around the top, on the berries and all the way around the edges.  I added a strip of double sided tape on the right hand side and added short lengths of  coordinating ribbon then flagging their ends.  I mounted the trimmed backgrounds - glittery pine cone gift wrap which came wrapped around one of our gifts this past season - to red card fronts and then mounted the greetings to them using 3D foam tape.  As you can see I made a few angled a bit and two square and even.  I did these cards more assembly line style.  I did each step for all of them one at a time.  Trimmed all the images, added a black line to all of them, watercoloured them and then added ribbon to all of the greetings.  I glued all the backgrounds to the front and then mounted all the greetings to them.  It was easier to make them all the same when using this method of assembly.  Happy with these and they are headed for the bucket when they are finished being pressed.        Therese

Birthday card featuring glittered flowers, handcut stems, embossed oval and a small greeting

This kit is one from my January cardmaking class.  I am making them up to build up my stash of ready made cards.  I am changing up a few of the elements as I go because too much of the same does not work really well for me.  For this card, I adhered the stamped, embossed and watercoloured resist background to a coordinating card front.  I embossed the oval with a Swiss Dot embossing folder and adhered it to my card front.  I hand cut some leaves and stems, embossed them and then glued them to my oval.  I added the flowers using 3D foam tape after trimming the stems to a proper length.  I tucked the little greeting from the kit into the leaves and used a small piece of 3d foam tape to the end which I flagged.  I really like this one!!

Thank you card featuring gift wrap, die cut gears, handmade washi tape and a little punchie greeting

After the holidays I always send cards to those who have blessed us with gifts over the season!  I got started with this card.  I started with a burnt orange card, added the kraft and black background (gift wrap from England) and then layered on three gears die cuts (TH-SX) in ivory, kraft and black.  I added a length of handmade washi tape from my stash (clothes pattern paper and double sided tape) over the bottom edge of all of them to give me a horizontal element to anchor my greeting.  The greeting ( laser printed punchie - Modern Label Punch - SU) I found in my stash, sponged the edges and added dots using a sharpie marker. I adhered it to my card using 3D foam tape.    I love the look of that washi tape and it is so easy to do.  Click on the link to go to the tutorial.    It is amazing how long supplies last - our trip to London was over a decade ago!!!            Therese

Thank you card featuring a layered punchie greeting with a length of folded seam binding

For this thank you card I started with a pink card and added the patterned scrapbook paper background.  I found a coordinating oval font greeting punchie (SU) in my stash and sponged its edges in pink.  I adhered it to a green punched oval (SU) and then to a scalloped oval punchie from vellum.  I cut a piece of deep rose seam binding and folded it in half and crossed the ends.  I added a small piece of double sided tape where they crossed to keep the two lengths together and added another piece to adhere it to the front of my card.  I added 3D foam tape to the back of my greeting and positioned it over the fold seam binding!  Pink and green is my favorite colour combination so I am inclined to really like this card and it soft background and greeting with a bit of punch with the seam binding!!          Therese

Exchange card featuring a cute gnome (digital), an embossed and sanded background and a round punchie greeting

For my second exchange card I used the same gnome image from Birdie Brown.   I started with a large orange envelope and created a brown card to fit inside.  I embossed a variety of white core card stock pieces using three different embossing folders and then started gluing them together using regular tape on the back side until I had a piece big enough to cover my card.  I trimmed it small enough to leave a bit of a border all the way around.  I sanded the piece to better reveal the embossed patterns and then adhered it to my card front.  I watercoloured the gnome image (laser printed Birdie Brown digital) and layered it onto navy cardstock before adhering it to my card using 3D foam tape.  I found the round punchie greeting in my stash.  It is a laser printed digital from Netty's Cards which I punched with a round 1 3/4" circle punch (SU).  I watercoloured it to coordinate with my card and adhered it with 3D foam tape as well.  Great fall card!!             Therese

A birthday card for my Mom (85) featuring a blue tag, an embossed collage background and a beautiful silk flower

My Mom will be 85 at the end of the month and we will be celebrating with her!!!!!  Blue is her favorite colour so I always like to include it when I am making a card for her.  I started with a large blue envelope and made a blue card to fit.  Next, I worked on a blue and white collage background. I dug through my scrap paper bucket and found a variety of white and blue pieces - a bit of watercolour trimmed from a decorative paper piece, some glittery gift wrap, tissue paper, etc.  I dug out a piece of scrap paper and glued on my white and blue scraps which included a few pieces of sheet music.  Once it was dry I embossed it with a large embossing folder which I had to do in three different runs to get it all done.  I stitched on two lengths of while lace and then adhered a length of white seam binding over the stitching tucking the ends to the back and adhering them with double sided tape.  I found this tag in my stash which coordinated so I added a small ribbon at the top and adhered it over my lace.  I found the greeting in my stash, trimmed it to size, distressed its edges and glued it to my tag.  A trip to my silk flower stash yielded these blue and white silk flowers which I layered and secured with a white button brad.  I added it to my collage background before adhering this large element to my blue card front.  I am very happy with how it turned out!!  My Mom is an amazing woman who has lived her life within certain confines but did it with grace.  This is a perfect card for her!!  She has been a seamstress and quilter most of her life hence the stitching and button brad!!             Therese

Christmas card - embossed decorative paper and ornament die cut, oval image and greeting with gold ribbon

For this Christmas card I started with the little oval image of an angel which I die cut (Nestibilities) from the back of a used Christmas card.  I sponged the edge in green and then mounted it to an embossed and sponged kraft ornament die cut (SX).  Really like how that worked out.  I found a piece of coordinating scrapbook paper which had subtle music notes on the top.  I used a musical embossing folder to enhance them and then sponged the area with brown and green ink.  I added gold ribbon to the neck of the ornament and a short piece to the back ground paper using double sided tape to secure the ends.  I adhered the background to a green card front.  I mounted the ornament over the end of the gold ribbon using 3D foam tape.  I sponged the edges of a little oval greeting (SU) which was stamped using a NOEL stamp from Quietfire before punching.  I mounted the greeting to a scalloped oval (SU) punched from the same green as the card.  I mounted this element to my card using 3D foam tape.              Therese

A honeycomb background with some fun font images which have been embellished

I found these backgrounds on my desk in a little container in which I have been collecting backgrounds leftover from other projects.  I created this background earlier this year using SU digital stamps when I was working on Valentine's cards.   I decided to find another creative way to use them so I added some sequins to these two.  For the first one, I added three little flower sequins which I mounted to the background just above the greeting using tiny gold brads.  I used a green fine tip marker and added some leaves, swirls and dots.  I watercoloured in the leaves as well as a few of the hexagons.  To finish off this element I manually embossed the edges with a dots embossing folder and mounted it to a red card front.  The Hello greeting is a part of an image font.  For the second card, I watercoloured some of the hexagons in yellow and blue/green and the bee's body (image font).  I coloured the bee wings with a clear glitter gel pen.  Next, I added yellow and white sequins to some of the hexagons using small pieces of glue dot to secure them in place.  Finally, I manually embossed a few aress with a dots embossing folder and mounted this large element to a blue/green card front.  I will have to go find this background and print off a few more as they are great for making cards in a hurry!!           Therese

Beautiful watercolour background with some embossing and simple layered greeting

I made this card along with a few more at the last minute last week!  I was looking for quick and easy!!  I found this watercolour background in my stash and wanted to jazz it up a bit without covering any of it up so I embossed it with a simple floral flourish which did exactly what I wanted it to.  I mounted it to a green card front and added a simple layered greeting to finish it off.  The greeting is laser printed onto white cardstock, punched out with the Word Window punch (SU) and layered onto a Modern label punchie in bright turquoise blue!!  Perfect!  I mounted it to my card using 3D double sided tape just where it needed to be so it would be in the flow of the watercolour design!!  I love doing these watercolour backgrounds - just random spots and swipes of colour on a large piece.  Once dry, I trim them to 4" x 5.25" for A2 cards and they make awesome cards quick and easy!!                  Therese

Easter card with a ribbon cross and printed greeting

My first Easter card!  I used a piece of packaging for my background - beautiful yellow and white stripes!!  There is a joint below the ribbon vertically and I angled the black gros grain just a bit so it is still covered by the ribbon.  I added a piece across horizontally to create a graphic cross on my background.  I really like the effect!!  I glued this background to a blue green card which coordinates with my greeting.  I really wanted to layer this round colour printed greeting but I could not find a layer colour that did not distract from the cross so I put it on without one using 3D foam tape to give it a bit of dimension.  A simple card with a simple message!!  Love it!

Colour blocked background with a new greeting and some leaf die cuts

One of the last kits to be finished off from my desk.   I used this colour blocked background and relegated the chalk board greeting to my stash.  I added the embossed background to a green card front and went looking for a greeting.  I found this laser printed one (Beccy's Place) which I have found difficult to include in my cards for some reason but it worked perfectly for this card.  I trimmed the greeting and flagged both ends, layered it onto yellow and flagged both ends again before watercolouring the flower and leaves.  I mounted this greeting with a bit of 3D foam tape in the middle and double sided taper on both ends which gives just the right amount of dimension and allowed me to tuck in my leaf die cuts.  I die cut the leaves (SU) from white cardstock and tuck a full one above the greeting and trimmed off the leader from the other and tucked it below the greeting.  I glued them in place with white glue applied with my fine tip applicator.  I love how it turned out!!!!!              Therese

Another washi tape and sequin card

For this card I used Distress ink for the watercolour background using my DIY foam stamp. I put on three strips of washi tape - the two on the right are commercial and the one on the left is handmade by me using red tissue paper and stamped with the stems from a flower stamp using black Versafine ink.  I really like how graphic and bold it looks!!  I manually embossed  some heart shapes using a heart embossing folder. and a hammer.  They I over embossed them with the Swiss Dot embossing folder (CB) and added texture all the way around.  I adhered this large layer to a red card front.  I fussy cut a laser printed chalkboard greeting and added two little heart rhinestones which I coloured with red Sharpies to coordinate with my card.  Add the greeting to my card using 3D foam tape and finished it off with three sequins that coordinated!!  I am really loving these fun cards!! Another leather leaf on a collage background - birthday card

I need another birthday card so I decided to create a collage background with a few of the supplies on my desk - decorative paper, collage scraps, leaf punchies, mop up paper, book page scraps, ATC, etc.  I used a scrap of cardstock as a base and glued all my elements on until I was happy with the layout.  I added a bit of watercolour to help incorporate all the elements.  I trimmed it to size and mounted it to a rust card front.  I added an embossed strip of mustard coloured cardstock and mounted my stitched leaf over it using double sided tape.  I tied some green raffia to the stem and added a bit of glue to adhere those two elements to the card.  I trimmed a laser printed greeting and layered it onto an embossed piece of orange cardstock, flagged both of the ends and tucked it under the mustard strip.  Love how it turned out!!

Hammered background for my sister's birthday card

I used one of my dandelion and radish leaves pounded backgrounds for this card for my sister's birthday. She loves sunflowers and it was as close as I could come at this time of the year!!  After the background was dry, I ironed it flat and trimmed it to 3.75" x 5". I added a length of yellow seam binding, layered it onto a coordinating green cardstock rectangle and stitched all the way around using green thread in my sewing machine.  I stamped the greeting just above the seam binding in dark green ink using my stamping jig.  I double stamped it to make sure it was dark enough to show up well.  I glued this large focal element to a bright yellow card front.  To simulate a bow I tied a short length of seam binding to the one on the front of my card using a single knot.  I love the way it turned out!!!  I will be seeing her later this week and we are headed out to do a bird photo shoot and enjoying lunch at a tea house.   One of her favorite things to do!!            Therese

Some more pounded flower backgrounds

I did a few more backgrounds the other day after picking my first radishes from my garden. I wanted something that would coordinate with the radish leaves and be different than the geraniums I made last time so I picked some dandelions.  They worked out really well.  It took a bit to figure out the results are better if you break up the flowers into threes before laying them down and it is really hard to get a full on circle flower because they are so thick all you get is a large circle of colour without too much detail.  The radish leaves were very juicy so it was worth having a paper towel handy!!   I did you my Big Shot again to "pound" the flowers which creates more of a problem with run off - I expect that if you used a hammer the juice would be absorbed more locally and the images might be better as well.  I will have to explore that.  It may also be possible to remove the one shim from the sandwich and accomplish the same thing.  Will let you know!!  I hope you will consider giving this technique a try - it is super easy!!  Follow the above link to find recommendations for flowers and greenery which you can use even if you don't have a garden!!  You can even find some options at the grocery store!!

Inky fun with a couple of colour printer cartridges

 We recently acquired a colour inkjet printer which required some intervention before it would print all the colours successfully so in the process of that repair there were two printer cartridges that were empty and ready to be put in the garbage.  Knowing that others have scavenged ink from markers I thought I would have a go with scavenging the ink leftover in the two cartridges - a yellow and a magenta.  You can see above that I have managed to bend back the top of the cartridge enough to access the inside (using a hack saw and a some pliers) and remove the sponges which were holding the remaining ink.   I simply added some water and the ink dissolved into it.  I filled two bottles with the ink I retrieved - a small one and a spray bottle.  I did the same with the magenta cartridge and got two bottles from that as well.  

Here are the papers I created in the process of removing the ink from the sponges.  I made several backgrounds on glossy photo paper (10) and the rest was applied to regular bond paper in a variety of patterns. So I have a LOT of backgrounds to use for my creative projects and 4 bottles of ink that I can use for making quite a few more.  It was a bit of a messy job and I should have wore gloves because my hand look like they have been "altered".  I expect it will wear off in a couple of days.   I am pretty happy with my little experiment and look forward to making up some cards with my glossy photo backgrounds.
