Birthday candles card kits - fun cards featuring large candles

 I made these card kits for my sister's daycare!! They are always looking for meaningful activities for the kids and I decided that maybe birthday cards kits would be good for when the kids have family members having birthdays and they want to bring them a bit of a surprise!!!  I used scraps from the bin of items she brought me along with some cardstock to make up the two tone cards.  I cut an 8.5" x 11" to 6.25" and then in two with decorative scissors which made one side of the card with a flap.  The other side was just the right size to fit under the flap and create the other side of the card.  So they can use the full colour side or the duplex side like I have done!!  I used scraps of paper (3/4" x 3") in a wide variety of colours to create the "candles" and included 6 in each kit.  I punched six "flames"  - folk heart punchies turned upside down - from scraps of yellow cardstock for each kit.  Once they were glued down I drew a wick in between with a pencil.  Too easy!!!! I made 23 kits and provided this sample.  I also included a few extra "candles and flames" and some instructions .   Hopefully the staff and kids will find these kits useful!!  Remembering special occasions knits families together!!!  Therese

Father's Day Card kits featuring a shirt and funky tie

I made up another set of card kits for my sister to use at her day care!!!  These are for Father's Day and feature a fun tie on a shirt.  I found all sorts of examples done in a variety of ways on line and so came up with my own pieces.  I created a tie in Corel Draw and printed them the right size for use with these envelopes.  I trimmed a lot of cards in fun colours to fit in the larger envelopes and then found some coordinating papers to make it interesting.  I cut the decorative papers just a smidge smaller than the card fronts so they kids can easily glue them in place without anything sticking out.  I marked the back with a triangle cut out which the adult caregivers will have to cut out for the kids.  Once the decorative paper in glued in place they will have to score the two sides of the V so the shirt collar will fold nicely to the front.  The tie then can be decorated and dried in any way they wish and then glued in place just under the collar!!!  I used blue watercolour for the background colour and  then stamped large circles with a hard sponge shape in yellow.  Once they were dry I added blue Stickles glitter glue!!  Once that was dry I added it to my card.  I made 23 card kits and this is my sample and included instructions for the caregivers!!    I have made St. Patrick ones and Easter ones too!!  Will see my sister this weekend and will find out how those went with the kids and caregivers!!  Therese
 

Art Party kits - denim bookmarks ready for embellishing

 I have made Art Party kits with the book marks which I made with denim scraps a while back.  They are ready for embellishing with any permanent media - acrylic paint, Inktense watercolour, ball point or gel pens, fabric scraps, machine or hand stitching!!  Your imagination is the limit!!  I tied 6 together with a tag with the above suggestions.  Parents will be looking for ideas to keep their kids busy over the summer and this would fit the bill.  I am donating them to the Gramma Link Africa Group for their merchandise table at the Rhubarb Extravaganza on Saturday, June 24, 2023 - 1:30pm to 3pm.

Slow Stitching - little fabric embellishments for handmade cards - bright rose and another heart

 I just finished another couple of slow stitched fabric embellishments for cardmaking.  For my first one, I used several batik fabrics to create a layered rose with leaves.  I layered an orange hand cut circle over a yellow one and then these two over a deep pink one.  I trimmed two half leaves from green and pinned them into place before adding my rose.  I stitched the leaves in place with black embroidery thread and then added the rose overlapping them.  I started in the center of the rose and used a running stitch to adhere all the layers to my ivory layer.  I reversed the running stitch to make a solid line.  I added this little piece to a piece of horsehair interfacing using a coordinating embroidery floss.   I used a small piece of iron on interfacing on the back of the horsehair to stabilize it.  I stitched my little creation to a dark green card using the same pink thread.  

For my second card, I stitched a pink hand cut heart to a small precut ivory scrap using pink thread and then filled it with stitching in blue, pink and yellow thread.  I added the little square to interfacing using blue thread and stitched it to my green card front using the same thread.

March Card Club - quick and easy all occasion cards using 4" x 4" photos from a calendar

 Our last card was a quick and easy one!!  The photos were all trimmed from photo calendars which I have received as a gift from my sister, Sylvia.  She makes up several photo calendars every year for sale and gifts.  She carries her camera with her when she is out and about with a keen eye for every photo op!!  I love her photography and the calendar images are perfect for adding to cards!!  The first card features a perfect abstract created by several bullrushes on a local pond.  Great eye!!  I cut a 4.25" x 11" card and folded it in half.  I added the photo and then a small embossed rectangle next to it.  I tied a ribbon over the small piece wrapping it all around the card and tying it off on the front with a double knot.  This card would be perfect as a sympathy card!!  

The next card features a tulip photo with a small yellow rectangle next to it and a red ribbon.  Perfect for Easter or a spring birthday!!

March Card Club - paper pieced backgrounds with a heart and butterfly for a focal element

 For our second card we made these cards.  They all had pieced backgrounds - some with double sided paper which gave a few more options.  We played with our pieces until we were happy with them and then adhered them to our coordinating card.  Next, we assembled our focal elements.  They were all different.  

For the first I layered a red rectangle over a black one and added a silver heart punchie!  For the second one I layered a colour printed square to a green one and added a butterfly punchie that had gold thread tied to its middle to create a body and antenna.  We simply added our focal elements to our card fronts using 3D foam tape.   It is fun to provide a lot of variety in these card kits!!  Therese

 

March Card Club - tulips for spring

 Great to see my cardmaking friends again!!!  Spring is coming and I thought we would start with flowers!!  I made up the tulips using three bird wings from the Bird Punch (SU).  You glue them together with two opposite and one more behind in which ever orientation you want.  You can make them skinny or wider and in whatever colour  you want.  I got all carried away and made mine all red. This is a great use of scraps!!!  We embossed our white layer and then built our tulips on it starting with the tulip heads, then we added glue to the stems and tucked them under the flowers and finally trimmed our leaves out of a scrap of green and added them to our creation!!  We trimmed our stems if they went farther than the bottom of our rectangle.  We glued our decorative paper to our coordinating card and then added our tulips!!  We embossed our thin strip, adhered it to the other one and trimmed it to the width of our card.  Tied the ribbon to this piece, trimmed our ends and then mounted to our card front somewhere near the bottom of our flowers!!  The tulips really do look wonderful and are great for anyone with a spring birthday or would make a great Easter card.         Therese

Slow Stitching - little embellishments for handmade cards - stitching and fabric shapes

 I continue slow stitching fabric embellishments for cardmaking!!  You can check out my previous ones which combine stitching, fabric shapes and Inktense watercolour. These ones feature fabric shapes which I cut from scraps. For my first card, I cut a heart from a pink floral fabric and stitched it to my ivory square which I found in my stash of precuts.  I stitched it on with blue thread and added tiny yellow stitches all over the inside.  I added this element to a layer of interfacing using pink embroidery thread.  I added a layer of iron on interfacing to the back to keep the piece square.  I used the same pink thread to stitch it to the front of a blue card which will allow it to be removed and added to another project by the recipient.    For my second card, I cut three little cup shapes from a bright fun fabric scrap.  I pinned them to my ivory square in a pleasing arrangement and then stitched them in place using pink thread.  Next, I proceeded to add stitching in black thread to create the stems, leaves, definition in the body and some french knot to simulate the stamens.  I stitched it to interfacing using pink thread and used the same thread to stitch it to the front of a pink card.   I did stabilize the horsehair interfacing with a piece of iron interfacing on the back.  I am really liking these cards and have a little stack of them ready to be stitched.

Quilting - casserole carrier with pink lacy fabric and a coordinating floral print

For this carrier I have been making lately.  It has a 24" backing, 22" inner and batting, 22" x 1.25" handle and two 6" x .5 inch loops.  I added a green stripe to the floral fabric to make it wide enough to be used as a backing.  The pink lacy fabric and the batting were trimmed to 22" square and stitched with a decorative stitch.  I used the green for the handle and the loops as well.  Because these are reversible you can use which ever side you like best as the outside.  The procedure is the same - lift the handle from the middle, place your container below it and then add the loops one at a time over the handle.  One handle you can put over your arm on your way to your next potluck with friends and family!!  Therese

 

Quilting - a casserole carrier with lacy pink cotton and a dark pink inner

I used the same pattern for this casserole carrier as I have been using which combines a 24" backing, 22" inner and batting, 22" x 1.25" handle and two 6" x .5 inch loops.  I used a dark pink fabric as the backing and another of my homemade battings along with another piece of the lacy pink cotton fabric.  Worked really well though I did sew on my loops in the opposite way but it still works well.

Quilting - casserole carrier in pinks and browns

I combined this fun lacy heart cotton fabric with a warmer tone that is on its way to being brown.  It is the standard carrier I have been making with a 24" backer, 22" inner fabric and batting.  The batting is one I made up from scraps of batting that I got from my Mom.  I sandwiched the pieces between two pieces of scrap fabric and then stitched them together.  It worked really well and made some hefty battings!!  I was maybe to generous with layers of batting but that will work really well in keeping the casseroles warm!!  The handle is about 1.25" wide doubled over and the loops are about 6" long and .5" wide.  There are a lot of patterns for this design of carrier on line.  You can check out the first one I made here. I used the same QAYG - no binding method that I have been using for my potholders and it works really well.    Therese

 

Quilting - two sets of potholders

I worked on these this weekend.  I had them cut out and ready with all the pieces that I needed so they did not take too long to sew up.  I found the country images fabric in my stash and pieced the bottom ones from a 5" square I found in my precuts along with some coordinating fabrics all the way around.   They were both backed with green cotton so it was nice and easy to do them both up at the same time.  I stitched around the images on the country ones and around the square for the bottom ones to keep all the fabrics together!!!  Two more sets to add to the stash!!  Therese

 

Quilting - denim pouches - a few more!!

 I managed to make a few more denim pouches.  I combined some denim pieces and added embellishments to highlight where they join - simply lace on one, fabric and lace on another.  I did a decorative stitch on the one with light striped denim.  I really like the decorative additions on the ends of of the zippers which makes a nice little accent to these pouches.  I used the scraps of denim I had on hand and so they are not all the same size but that works as well because they are not all going to be used for the same thing!!!  Therese

Quilting - potholders from black cherry and pink fabric

 I made this set of potholders from the two pieces leftover black cherry fabric.  I paired with a black and white floral fabric which was the best match from my stash.  I added a pink stripe across the black cherry fabric and then used the QAYG - no binding potholders technique which I have been using a lot for my many projects!!  They coordinate with the black cherry casserole carrier.  All cotton fabric and cotton flannel batting which makes the best potholders!!!  Therese

Quilting - denim zippered pouches for pens & pencils, art supplies, make up, cords or make up!!!

I worked on denim pouches this week.  I used scraps of denim that were being discarded from the fabric sale because they were two small for much of anything.  I added the scraps leftover from the denim journal covers as well.  I dug through my zipper stash and found a few that were the right length  -7" to 8".  I added a piece of fabric to each end of the zipper to allow the zipper to not be in the side seam at all.  Gives a bit of an accent as well.  I cut a piece of denim about 8.5" x 10" or so and then added the zipper between the two cut sides which creates a loop.  I decided to have the zipper on the front side instead of the top.  I covered the side seams with bias tape to make the inside of the pouch neater.  Check out the photos below - the back side of the pouch and then the pouch turned inside out - you can see the blue bias tape on the two side seams.  I remember as a student making our own "pencil cases" for school out of denim. They are great surfaces for embellishing with blue ball point pen!!!!  These pouches will certainly fill the need for carrying pencils, pens, crayons, etc but can be used for phones, , electronic cords, art supplies, make up, etc as well.  Will have these on the merchandize table for Gramma Link Africa later this year.    Therese

 

Quilting - pink and black cherries casserole carrier - reversible

I brought home a casserole carrier from our fabric sale sorting session that only needed a bit of velcro.  I usually wash all the fabric I bring home so in the washer and dryer it went with everything else.  Bummer! The black cherry fabric shrunk and now the lining was too big and was bulging!!!  I decided that I needed to fix it so I unravelled the seams and gave it an upgrade to this wonderful pink fabric!!  I added a strip of pink to the black cherry fabric to make it large enough and a different batting because the one it came with was not the right size and somewhat insufficient for the task of keeping a dish hot or cold.  I used the same QAYG - no binding method I have been using for my potholders which works really well.  Black Cherry was 22" square, pink was 24" square, handle 23" long (3.5 wide - folded in a half inch and then in half and stitched down both sides),  6.5" loops (1.5" wide folded in quarter in and then in half and stitched on the one side).   As you can see from the photos it can be used with either side facing out.  Therese

 

Quilting - denim bookmarks

I have made up some denim book marks using scraps leftover from other projects.  I cut strips 1.5" wide from the scraps I had available and then stitched two back to back with the "good" side out which on some of these is the worn, distressed and textured side.  I cut a few individuals and then stitched the remaining ones into a long strip from which I cut lengths of 6" - 8" depending on where the closest overlap was.  I then stitched on both sides of where I cut the bookmarks and then used my crop a dile to make holes at the top.  I will be finishing all the holes with stitching using variegated thread.  That will be a good slow stitching project for the next few weeks.  I am leaving them without other decoration and will be promoting them as DIY art projects where the recipient can add their own embellishments or art to make them their own.  It could be in the way of stitching, gel or ball point pen, markers, acrylic paint, Inktense watercolour, etc.  A fun project!!

Quilting - Fabric Gift Wrap with sparkly fabric!!

 I have come to appreciate fabric gift wrap (furoshiki) and acquired this jersey knit fabric that was so very sparkly that I could not resist making some gift wrap with it.  It is a bit heavier than the fabric I have used in the past but does tie a decent knot.  I managed to make over eight wraps with the yardage I had in several different sizes.  The smallest is 15" square and the largest is 38" square with most being about 23" square.  These wraps do not need any other embellishments and use knots to secure the contents therefore store flat in very little room and   Check out below the very many ways you can tie these wraps below.    I usually use the Kakushi Tsutsumi technique for wrapping my gifts.  Therese

Quilting - bright and cheery jar openers from fabric and shelf liner

 I have made a few more of these jar openers!!  I made a few a while back and you can check them out here.   I cut the shelf liner (6" square) and the fabric (8.5" square) and then combined them in the same way that I make up the pot holders.  You can check out the tutorial for QAYG - No binding Pot holders.  I really like how well these came together.  I had to use paper between the shelf liner and the foot of my sewing machine when I was sewing the X on the center of my openers.  This X helps keep the layers together when you use the jar opener.    A few hours of sewing that was very productive.   Therese

Quilting - aprons and coordinating potholders for the Gramma Link Africa fundraiser

I worked on these two aprons with coordinating potholders today!!  I've had the fabric for a while and since have found some navy fabric to coordinate with it so I could make the potholders.  

The aprons are adjustable with a long tie that goes through casings in the armholes which forms a loop that goes over your head and then ties around your waist.  I found the pattern and instructions on Instructables. This site is great and has a LOT of tutorials on a WIDE variety of subjects - cooking, outside projects, crafting, etc!! There is a search feature so go and check them out!!!  

The potholders were made with some of the same Budweiser fabric and scraps of navy blue and red.  I used the same GAYG technique that I have been using for some time.  Check it out here on You Tube.  So a few more projects ready to for the sale in June.  It was a very good day of sewing and I am happy to be finished these two.  I have enough scraps to make a few more potholders so I will cut those out this week and maybe get them stitched up next week.   Nice to have small projects in the wings when you have a bit of time to sew!!!  Therese
