Quilting - Jar openers with fabric and shelf liner

 I made up a few of these jar openers using fabric and shelf liner I had on hand.  There are a lot of tutorials on how to make these and a few different ways of doing it as well.  I chose to do one layer of fabric and one layer of shelf liner.  I cut the fabric to 8.5" x  8.5" and the shelf liner to 6" x 6" with my rotary cutter.  I created them just like I am making my QAYG potholders.  I folded all the sides over twice to overlap the shelf liner.  A cardboard template is very handy when you are folding over and pressing because the iron will damage the shelf liner and stick very nicely to your iron.  Once everything is pressed I unfold the corners and trim off a small triangle to reduce the bulk.  Then I sew down two opposite sides and then fold and pin the corners on one of the other sides and stitch it in place.  And lastly, I do the other side the same way.  All sides nicely stitched!!  Next, I stitched an X in the center to secure the fabric to the liner to keep them together when you are opening a jar.  I had to use a piece of paper over the shelf liner to get my presser foot to glide properly.  It is easy enough to rip off the paper from one side and then remove the other side after stitching.  Any little pieces that get stuck in the stitches are easy remove as well.  The last thing to do is to trim all your threads and you are done.  I used bright fabrics with red in them which meant that I did not have to change thread.   These will be donated to a sale this year!!
